Records are made to be broken. We’re busy on improvements to make sure 2024 is both the biggest and best event in poker history. Mark your calendars and bank those vacation days. I spoke with Holzner ahead of the Main Event, and he has the most interesting story beyond his small stakes rise to poker’s most presigious and richest tournament. Holzner lives in the northern Italy town of South Tyrol near the Austria border. He works on his family’s apple farm with his dad and speaks mostly German along with Italian and English. He told me of his journey to Las Vegas for the WSOP Main Event. Las Vegas Review-Journal Phil Ivey has already won a WSOP bracelet this summer to improve his total to 11, six shy of Phil Hellmuth. Ivey ended his Day 1 with a lot more chips than Hellmuth here, bagging up 153,500, good for 2.5x the starting stack of 60,000. Several former Main Event winners ended Day 1d with chips, too, as Joe McKeehen (121,300), Martin Jacobson (117,800) and Scotty Nguyen (104,900) all survived. The 2023 winner and defending champion Daniel Weinman (55,600) won big with quads early, but lost a few late on to dip below starting stack in his defense of the title.
